Final Project Ideas

Getting to choose a final project is just an awesome experience.  It means that you can conduct a project on something that you are passionate about.  I am most interested in the role that social media (specifically Twitter) and sports play in Jerusalem.

Twitter really interests me mainly because social media is such a strong tool.  Throughout history there have been various conflicts and even wars just from words.  By looking at twitters impact in Jerusalem, it would be interesting to see how conflicts can escalate and ease 140 characters at a time.

Looking at sport is highly interesting as well because it usually brings people together.  Look at the Olympics...it is the only time that the whole world gets together as one.  Also competition between culture has can have such a big societal  impact as evidenced by the United State's "Miracle on Ice" in 1980.

  1. Danny, your interest in Social Media, specifically Twitter, interests me very much and is something I think would be great to do a project on.

This summer, I went to a conference in Las Vegas called ICSC, or the International Conference of Shopping Centers. There they had a guest speaker for openning ceremenonys. His name is Malcolm Galdwell and he is a genious bestselling author of books such as Blink and Outliers.

Anyway, he brought up a very interesting point that looked at the power of social media. Coincidentally, he spoke of the Arab Spring and uprising in Egypt. He talked about how the media portrayed the uprising which finally overtook the government as being because of Twitter, that people could use social media to communicate and congregate. However, this assertation is false.

It is his argument and my belief that the uprising was a result of social media being TURNED OFF. The government in Egypt took the country "offline" and it was after this that people took to the streets, to communial real estate buildings, to protest and soon after take out the government.

It is an interesting perspective and not just shows why community center real estate is extremly important, the point he made given why he was there, but that social media needs to be examined from different lenses.
